Disable "Recently opened files" list in Vista
In an effort to help users, Windows Vista, by default, creates a handy list of recently opened files and programs. For those of you that require these items to be private, here's how to disable the list:
- Right click an open area of the taskbar.
- Select Properties from the resulting menu.
- Click the Start Menu tab.
- Uncheck the checkboxes under "Privacy" titled:
- Store and display a list of recently opened files
- Store and display a list of recently opened programs
- Click OK when finished.
Force users to login with a user name and password in Vista
In order to remove the list of user accounts and have users login using a password and user name. The following settings must be changed:
- Go to Start
- In the Search box, type: local security policy
- Double click the local security policy entry
- Open "Local Policies"
- Select "Security Options"
- Double click the entry titled: "Interactive Login: Do not display last user name"
- Place a checkmark in the "Enabled" checkbox
- Click OK
